Creating a Koi Series has been a joy from photographing them to creating entirely new techniques to express what I see. I have been in love with Koi (also known as Japanese carp) for many years. Besides their colors, they have beautiful, graceful lines that are easily simplified without losing those characteristics. The Japanese referred to them as “swimming flowers,” and they are associated with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. Because of their determination to overcome obstacles, they stand for courage and the ability to attain high goals.
“When you see a fish you don’t think of its scales, do you? You think of its speed, its floating, flashing body seen through the water. If I made fins and eyes and scales, I would arrest its movement, give a pattern or shape of reality. I want just the flash of its spirit.” –Constantin Brancusi
